My 10 Favorite Fantasy Covers
So, we’ve got that old adage about not judging a book by its cover but, let’s face it, we do. That’s part of why books HAVE covers. Well, cover art that is. Have you ever read a book that had cover art you could just sit and stare at?
I have, and here are are my top ten favorite fantasy book covers (of books I’ve read and have in my collection):
-
Mouse Guard: Fall 1152 by David Petersen
This cover drew me to the Archaia booth at Comic-Con when I was headed somewhere totally different.
-
OD Magic by Patricia McKillip
This is a really beautiful cover. It’s one of those that’s a bit obscure to the actual book it covers, but it’s so darn nifty it’s hard to care about that.
-
Yendi by Steven Brust
I loved this cover when I was a teenager. It’s coolness dimmed slightly after I’d read several of the books and realized the character had a mustache and likely wouldn’t wear such a fancy pants cloak. Still…
-
Dragonsinger by Ann McCaffrey
I admit it: I read this book for the cover. I was a junior high student and my English teacher had it in her room’s library. It’s one of those that is a bit shy of the actual characters once you get into it. But I don’t care.
-
Traitor’s Moon by Lynn Flewelling
I can just stare at this cover for hours.
-
Urban Shaman by C.E. Murphy
I love how the art for this cover wraps around the book to make one large picture.
-
Polgara the Sorceress by David & Leigh Eddings
Great cover that’s not only something great to look at buy does a great job of presenting the main character.
-
Monster by A. Lee Martinez
Great graphic design on this cover art that makes it look like a Yellow Pages ad for the special animal control agency one of the main characters works for.
-
Alcatraz Versus the Scrivener’s Bones by Brandon Sanderson
Everytime I pull this one off the shelf to re-re-read I have to pause and stare at the cover for a while. I also love that, on the hardcover, the cover art is printed on BOTH the cover and the dust jacket.
-
Throne of Jade by Naomi Novak
Simple but striking. This is another I just have to stare at when I re-re-read it.
