Graphic Novel Love

Graphic Novels in My To-Read Pile: March 2011

I LOVE graphic novels, comic books, and manga. Right now I’m reading the Essential Dr. Strange vol. 1.

I’ve got even more sequentially goodness in my To-Read pile, though:

I have even more in my To-check Out Shelf on GoodReads. But those two are the only graphic novels currently sitting in my every growing To Read pile.

There’s a wide range of stuff in the graphic novel format, from dialogue free all-ages tales like Korgi to Rex Libris type stylized sci-fi romps with super librarians. You should totally check out the selection at your local comic shop or library and add one or two to your own To Read pile.

Review: The Adventures of Rabbi Harvey by Steve Sheinkin

This Book Is About

After finishing school in New York, Rabbi Harvey traveled west in search of adventure and, hopefully, work as a rabbi. His journey took him to Elk Spring, Colorado, a small town in the Rocky Mountains. When he managed to outwit the ruthless gang that had been ruling the town, the people invited Harvey to stay on as the town’s rabbi. In Hervey’s adventures in Elk Spring, he settles disputes, tricks criminals into confessing, and offers unsolicited bits of insight and wisdom.

Each story presents Harvey with a unique challenge–from convincing a child that he is not actually a chicken, to retrieving stolen money from a sweet-faced bubbe gone bad. Like any good collection of Jewish folktales, these stories contain layers of humor and timeless wisdom that will entertain, teach and, especially, make you laugh.

2010 Comic-Con Wrapup

San Diego International Comic Convention LogoSweet, sweet Comic-Con has come and gone here in San Diego. Another year of massive TV panels, crowded Gas Lamp restaurants, piles of freebies, new comic releases, great vendors, and small press discoveries for all.

Last year I attended on a Professional pass with Fanig, a buddy’s company, because of some freelance coloring and book layout work I’d done for their RPG module. This year I was on an Exhibitor pass, helping my jeweler friend run her booth (Adorable Mayhem). Was that ever EXHAUSTING! I did make it out onto the floor a few times (as well as into the Dr. Horrible Sing Along Blog Sing Along Panel [go on, say THAT three times fast] with some friends).

I’ve got to get myself on the Press list for next year’s Con.

My 2010 Comic-Con Discoveries

Here’s a big list of all the wonderful new small press, indie, and web comic titles I discovered at this 2010 Comic-Com:

Review: Red Monkey Double Happiness Book by Joe Daly

This Book Is About

Set in sun-drenched Cape Town, South Africa, The Red Monkey Double happiness Book features two full-length stories – “The Leaking Cello Case” and “John Wesley Harding” – about the monkey-footed Dave and his freeloading hippy pal Paul. The book’s stuffed to the gills with mystery, suspense, action, adventure, conspiracy theories, and cool cars as Dave and Paul thwart criminal malfeasance even as they ponder the larger questions. Such as, “What steps can I personally take to help protect Earth and the species that inhabit it?” (Though most people’s answers don’t involve sword fights and hovercrafts.)

The Red Monkey Double Happiness Book, brings a dry, deadpan wit anchored in everyday reality combined with unnervingly deranged plots, rendered with a half-realistic and half-cartoony TinTin-style crispness. Suited to adults and older teens.

Comic-Con starts rolling next Wednesday. So EXCITED! To celebrate, I’m reviewing some great graphic novels (most of which are indie or small press) with several posts a week leading up to Con’s start. Also, look forward to a Superhero Fiction book list next week. If you’re attending Comic-Con, stop by Exhibitor table A04 for the MAGBOO booth and day ‘hi’; I’m helping my friend with her Adorable Mayhem jewelry booth.
