Review: The Lighthouse Stevensons by Bella Bathurst
This Book Is About
![]()
The extraordinary story of the building of the Scottish lighthouses by the ancestors of Robert Louis Stevenson. For centuries the seas around Scotland were notorious for shipwrecks. Mariners’ only aids were skill, luck, and a single coal-fire light on the east coast, which was usually extinguished by rain. In 1786 the Northern Lighthouse Trust was established, with Robert Stevenson appointed as chief engineer a few years later-the beginning of a partnership spanning almost two centuries and four generations of the same family, which included the writer Robert Louis Stevenson.
My Thoughts On This Book
I got The Lighthouse Stevensons as an advance reader when I worked at the SFSU bookstore in San Francisco. It’s a good account of the history of the Scottish lighthouses and how they’re technological advance was marshaled by the family of famous author Robert Louise Stevenson.
It was Scotland that created the image of the lone lighthouse on a rock at sea, surrounded by pounding waves. This book starts with a quick chapter on the history of coastal lights in Scotland and their first lighthouse. Subsequent chapters each focus on one of the lighthouses built by the Scottish lighthouse agency while at the same time giving family history about the Stevensons, who were the engineers for the Northern Lighthouse Trust for four generations.
The last lighthouse in the book was built by Robert Louise Stevenson’s father, so you also get direct history on that author and how his family’s work on the Scottish lights influence the development of some of his classic works./p>
I enjoy reading The Lighthouse Stevensens, it’s one of those books you can open to any random point and read comfortably from there. There are also many reproductions of original cross-section drawings of the historic lighthouses the book covers. A good book whether you’re interested in the sea, maritime history, Scotland, lighthouses, or Robert Louise Stevenson.
