MoonPies and Movie Stars by Amy Wallen
This Book Is About
![]()
Ruby Kincaid is busy these days, running her late husband’s bowling alley, wrangling her pistol of a sister, Loralva, and chasing after the two grandchildren abandoned by her runaway daughter, Violet-to say nothing of keeping up with life in Devine, Texas, population 894. When she sees Violent dressed as a milkmaid starring in a TV commercial, there’s only one thing to do-it’s Hollywood or bust.
Certain all her daughter needs is a little guilt trip from Momma to set her straight, Ruby packs up a Winnebago and hightails it all the way to California to fetch wayward Violet. Along for the ride are Loralva, who wouldn’t dare miss a trip to the game show capital of the world; Violet’s mother-in-law, Imogene; Ruby’s two unruly grandkids; and a giant-size package of MoonPies to keep them all quiet. A madcap road trip from the dusty flats of Devine to the glittering aisles of the set of The Price Is Right.
My Thoughts On This Book

I want to buy this book for everyone I know. It’s a great read and the characters are real people and fun to read about, especially Ruby’s high voltage sister Loralva (la-raul-vaw, only you have to think it with a Texas twang).
Amy is the moderator for First Fridays, a writer reading event for members of San Diego Writer’s Ink (to which John belongs). Sometimes she’d read from her MoonPies manuscript and each month I’d go to First Fridays hoping Amy would read more about ‘The Price Is Right Ladies’, as I called them. I was on tenter hooks for the book to come out because I wanted the whole story and I knew my Mom would love the book (the release party was a blast, complete with cowboy shirts and Frito pie). When I read her book, I hear Amy’s voice.
MoonPies and Movie Stars is set in the 1970′s. When Ruby announces she’s going to leave town and go to California to bring her grandkids’ Momma back, folks in town are horror stricken and warn her not to go to California because transvestites will mug her for her clothes. Being a Californian all my life, I was quite amused to see my home State through the lens of a 70′s era Texan lady and her firecracker of a sister.
This isn’t just some ‘on-the-road’ travel story. The road trip is just part of the plot; the Winnebago just takes the reader and the characters from point A to point B. The real story happens in little ‘ol Devine, Texas (‘pont A’), and massive Hollywood, LA, California (‘point B’). Like life, there’s lots of humor and drama in this book. It has a comfort to it, like Grama telling a good story.
You so should stop reading this review and go get a copy.
