This Book Is About
![]()
With topics ranging from watering and feeding to spirit and aesthetics, this is an all-in-one guide to the art of the bonsai. It features advice on looking for and raising trees; handling pests and diseases; using composts; potting; choosing containers; pruning the plants; and displaying them. A convenient A-Z guide covers virtually every species of indoor and outdoor tree.
My Thoughts On This Book
If you want to quickly understand the how-to and aesthetic of bonsai than this is the book you want.
The table of contents, like many modern modern plant books, is divided into color coded sections. These colors are printed on the edges of the pages so you can go, say, straight to the pruning without bothering with page numbers.
What makes this thin book really great, though, is the graphical way it presents and divides information. So, instead of reading or skimming through a whole chapter for how to secure the roots or what shape pot to choose for your plant, you just flip through to the bordered callout with that header and information.
There are also lots of small, watercolor illustrations accompanying every group of information. They’re incorporated into the paragraphs, with the text wrapping around them, just like on a webpage. So, you get your pictures right there with the information instead of having to hunt down Figure 2a.
After reading this book I definitely feel like I could start doing serious bonsai.
If you’re new to Japanese miniature trees or are an author or artist looking for quick information for a story Bonsai Specialist is an excellent starting source.
