My Thoughts On This Book

Page scan from The Annotated Alice, showing Tenniel's illustration for the White Rabbit alongside annotations and textThis is the best-ever edition of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. First of all, you have unabridged versions of these two great books by Carol, which means there are scenes, like the giant puppy in Alice, that most people don’t even know about.

Secondly, you have the classic artwork by John Tenniel who illustrated the first editions of Alice and Looking-glass. In addition to the original art for both books, there are also several pages at the end with recently discovered concept drawings by Tenniel for his Alice artwork.

Lastly and best, every page has numbered notes with historical significance, background info and interesting details written by one of the world’s leading authorities on Lewis Carroll and his works. Numbers corresponding to those accompanying the margin annotations appear throughout the text. When you encounter a number you can either continue reading or find the matching number for the note in the margin about that passage. Gardner’s annotation writing is fun to read and always has interesting information.

The first time I read The Annotated Alice: The Definitive Edition was shortly after John bought his copy when we both lived in San Francisco. I just straight read the annotations, following the numbers to the text instead of vice versa since I’d read Alice in Wonderland before. My favorite notation is the one connecting the origin of the Cheshire Cat’s smile with cheese.
