Amulets of Ancient Egypt by Carol Andrews

This Book Is About

Front cover of Amulets of Ancient EgyptAmulets were first made in Egypt as early as 4000 BC and were essential adornments for both the living and the dead. In this book, Carol Andrews offers the first comprehensive account of the types of amulets made, their symbolism, and their protective powers. Both a reference book and an informative account of Egyptian magical belief, this is the most complete survey of the subject to date.

My Thoughts On This Book

I had Carol Andrews’ book recommended to me by an Egyptologist as a good source for a paper I was writing on the subject of ancient Egyptian amulets for one of my Cultural Anthropology courses.

This is a really great source book, not just for it’s first-rate information but for the easy-to-follow and read organization of that information. Amulets is also thoughtfully illustrated, with captions for every photo and plate. There are over 70 black-and-white photographs and twenty color plates of groupings of amulets. There are also a couple of line drawings.

Here’s the list of chapter titles:

  4. Scarabs for the living and funerary scarabs
  5. Amulets of assimilation
  6. Amulets of powers
  7. Amulets of offerings, possessions and property
  8. Materials and their symbolism

This isn’t some occult instruction book, but a valuable resource for understanding the religeon and culture of a vanished civilization. Whether you’re researching ancient Egyptian culture and amulets for a book, a paper, art or curiosity’s sake you need this book as a reference. This will be among your most useful, and easy to read, reference books.
