My Thoughts On This Book
I love to hear a good story, and reading All Creatures Great and Small is like listening to a skilled storyteller; James Herriot writes like he’s talking to you. I really enjoy reading the stories about his life as a veterinary in the Yorkshire countryside because of the companionably self-effacing humor with which the author recounts his adventures and mishaps. The way he speaks about his friends, patients, colleagues and enemies is like sitting in a cozy living room with a family friend.
This, and Herriot’s other works, have been so widely enjoyed by so many that the BBC based a TV show on them in the 70′s, called All Creatures Great and Small after the author’s first book. This series ran, and is likely still shown, on PBS in the U.S and is how I first became aware of these wonderful and engaging stories when I was a kid. Neither the books or the show are better than the other, it’s one of those rare instances when intertextual versions march hand-in-hand in tribute to an author’s storytelling mastery.
All Creatures Great and Small is a really fun work and one those that you can pick up and open to any random point and be content reading from there. Like One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch, this is a book that I can’t see my personal library ever being without. I’ve read it again and again, and I’ll read it many more times, I’m sure.
